GUIDELINES FOR ORDERING SEED

Determine your seed requirement.

·      Identify the species, variety or provenance appropriate for your needs.
·      Seed requirements depend on planting design and desired spacing.

Review available information.

Contact us for more information.

Order the seed well ahead of the time it is needed.

·      We may not have stocks of the seed you need. Knowing the quantity of seed orders in advance, allows us to collect and ship seed in time to meet your needs. This is very important particularly for recalcitrant seed (recalcitrant seed can be stored only for a short period after collection) and for species that flower and produce seeds at irregular interval (not every year).
·      Consider the time required to raise health seedlings for field planting. For most species the nursery period is 2 to 12 months.

Provide the following information.

·      Your detailed address (street and number, city, district, province, country, postal code, telephone and facsimile number, email, and name of contact person).
·      The most reliable form of shipping (surface mail, airmail, courier) to your location.
·      The quantity of seed required.
·      The date you desire to receive the seed and the intended sowing date.
·      Specify the type of seed storage facility available to you.

Confirm your seed order as soon as possible.

·      After receiving confirmation from us, confirm your seed order (species and quantities of seed) as soon as possible. Complete and return any seed order form that is required.
·      Provide all the details listed in number 4 above again, so the information is easily accessible to us.
·      Make an advance payment if required and specify the mode of shipping you prefer.

After receiving seed.

·      Acknowledge that you received the seed.
·      Make any remaining payment as agreed.
·      Follow the instruction on seed storage and pre-sowing treatment when applicable.
·      File and safeguard the documentation provided with the seed. This information is important as a reference and for ordering additional seed.
·      If you redistribute this seed, do not forget to provide copies of the documentation with the seed.
·      Keep us informed on performance of the seed and any problem encountered with seed germination, seedlings establishment, pest and diseases.

Importing and exporting seed to or from India (Minister of Forestry regulations).

·      Applications for the import/export permits should include the following information : purpose, species, quantity, source of seed, and country of origin/destination.
·      Imported seed should be accompanied by a certificate of origin, certification of quality, and phytosanitory certificate.
·      Exportable seed are quality seed produced in planted forests and not included on lists of rare or endangered species protected by law.

Alkaloid
Alkaloids are a group of nitrogen-containing bases. Alkaloids were among the earliest isolated pure compounds with biological activity. Alkaloids have diverse and important physiological effects on humans and other animals. Among the most famous of the alkaloids are the Solanaceae or tropane alkaloids, quinine extracted from Cinchona succirubra, and morphine alkaloids, derived from the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. Many alkaloids are poisonous in nature , some are used medicinally as analgesics (pain relievers) or anaesthetics and for other uses.

Bitters
Bitter are the beverages in which water or alcohol is used to dissolve or blend the medicinally components from the plant materials. The plant containing bitters reflectively induce stimulation on the salivary gland and secretion of the gastric juice, thus Bitters are used to strengthen and improve the whole digestive system as well as the nervous system. Bitter shows broad effect on the body i.e. on physiology, and tone. It is benefical for lowering lipid levels, gastrointestinal complaints, mineral metabolism and hair loss, however in western society, it is used by dietary supplement manufacturers for its weight loss properties.

Flavones
Flavones are polyphenolic compounds present in plants as secondary metabolites. It is a class of flavonoids based on the backbone of 2-phenylchromen-4-one. It is most commonly known for their antioxidant activity. It is present in green vegetables, fruits, berries and beverages such as tea, red wine and fruit juices. Naturally occurring flavones includes Apigenin, Luteolin and Tangeritin. It provides many health benefits like protect against damage in blood vessels, thus decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, prevent cancer and enhances immune system of body.

Glycosides
Glycosides are compounds containing a carbohydrate and a noncarbohydrate residue in the same molecule. An acetyl linkage at carbon atom 1 attaches the carbohydrate residue to a noncarbohydrate or non sugar residue or AGLYCONE.
The nonsugar component is known as the AGLYCONE. The sugar component is called the GLYCONE. If the carbohydrate portion is glucose, the resulting compound is a GLUCOSIDE.

Mucilage and Gums
Mucilage is naturally occuring gum or glutinous substance, comprised mainly of polysaccharides. It swells but does not dissolve in water and form a jelly like mass. Mucilage is secreted by various plant parts. It is the chief constituent of agar. It serves to check water loss , food storage and in the process of seed dispersal. Mucilage is edible, and has got wide application as an emollient , adhesive or a demulcent in cough syrups and in others medicines. Ulmus rubra, is a typical mucilaginous herb.

Resin
Plant resins are simply secretion of plants, obtain either from the entire plant or from specific parts of the plant. Resin is mainly consist of volatile terpenes, along with esential oils and gums in little amount. Resinis are insoluble in water and soluble in alcohol. Plant resins used in many purposes such as varnishes, adhesives, as an important raw material for organic synthesis or for incense and perfume. Active components of a plant can be concentrated into the resinous extracts, greatly reducing the volume, and greatly reducing the amounts needed for effective use.

Saponin
Saponins are natural surfactants, or detergents, found in many plants, especially certain desert plants. Saponins are glycosides of steroids with a distinctive foaming characteristic. Saponins have long been known to have strong biological activity. They consist of a polycyclic aglycone that is either a choline steroid or triterpenoid attached via C3 and an ether bond to a sugar side chain. The antifungal and antibacterial properties of saponins are important in cosmetic applications, in addition to their emollient effects.

Root/Rhizome
Roots are underground plant parts, which obtain nutrients i.e. food and water from the soil and provide support by anchoring the plant. Roots consist of root hairs and root cap. They also store sugars and carbohydrates, which is utilized by the plant to carry out other functions.

Rhizomes are thick, horizontal, underground stem capable of producing the shoot and root systems of a new plant. Rhizomes grow close to soil and have nodes and scale like leave. This capability allows the parent plant to propagate vegetatively (asexually) and also enables a plant to perinnate (survive an annual unfavorable season) underground.

Wood/Stem
Stem is the axis of a plant, which is generally upright and above ground, easy to locate and identify. However, many stems grow below ground or are ground hugging. They support the plant, and act like the plant's plumbing system, conducting water and nutrients from the roots and food in the form of glucose from the leaves to other plant parts.

Wood is the secondary xylem of dicots and gymnosperms. It is the hard fibrous, lignified substance present under the bark of the tree. It is mainly utilized in the building materials or furniture or for papermaking.
